Cairo
Cairo is the capital City of Egypt. The name was corrupted by the English from the Arabic name `Al-Qahira’ which means conqueror. It is the biggest city in Africa and also the 16th most populated town in the World. The city is often referred to as `The City of 1000 Minarets’ as a result of the prevalent Islamic architecture. The city acts as a hub for religious, cultural and political activities. The city was established in the 10th century by the Fatimid Dynasty.
Population
The city has a population of 6,758,581 people occupying a region of 453 sq. km. There is an additional 10 million people living in the outskirts of the city. The city is rated 11th as the largest urban area across the World. The city is among the two in Africa that is ranked among the busiest in Africa. Pollution and traffic is also a major problem just like in other cities in Africa. An estimated 700 million people commute annually.
Economy
The economy of Cairo was ranked as the leading in the Middle East region and the 43rd developed in the word. Multinational businesses and businesses are operated from Cairo. The economy of the country has been growing steadily from 1952 despite the Cairo fire, which was a revolution meant to drive the British out of the country. The infrastructure network has been developed faster. The population growth has been increasing steadily.
Housing and settlement
After Cairo regained control of Gezira and the water front region from the British, population have been increasing steadily in the region. The fertile Nile Delta got engulfed in the Cairo city conurbation. Congestion in the area made the government to develop desert satellite towns so that some city dwellers can settle there as a way of decongesting the city. Among the new cities that have been developed to decongest the city include New Cairo, West of Cairo, 6th of October City and East of Cairo among other high end residential areas.
Real estate value
The cost of land and houses is directly dependent on the city you are purchasing in. Land located in the fertile Nile Delta can even cost triple the amount required to purchase similar size of land in the satellite towns. Similarly, the house value in the original town is high and competitive as many people are looking to settle in this region.
Recent establishment of satellite towns have led to development of high end estates out of the city that are affordable and in high demand. A good network of infrastructure has made houses out of the highly polluted and city life in high demand.
